confidentiality
Confidentiality is at the heart of the therapeutic relationship so your privacy and anonymity are of paramount importance. The Data Protection Act 1998 applies to all my records and under the General Data Protection Regulations 2018, you have right of access to the information I hold about you; and the right to be forgotten. I will not share your information with anyone, without your consent, except:
Professional supervision
The BACP Ethical Framework requires therapists to be professionally supervised and for that purpose I will disclose information to my supervisor, who is more senior and more experienced than I. Supervision sessions are themselves bound by confidentiality.
Legal limitations
Confidentiality may have to be broken if:
Serious injury or harm may occur to the patient or someone else;
Female genital mutilation or child abuse has been disclosed;
Information is disclosed about an act of terrorism;
A miscarriage of justice will occur; or
The therapist is summoned by a court of law.
